HEPA filters are highly effective restraint systems capable of trapping even the smallest particles present in the air. The name HEPA comes from the acronym of ‘High Efficiency Particulate Air’.
These filters are composed of fine glass fibers arranged randomly forming a kind of mesh that is responsible for retaining particles from the air. Although the diameter of the fibers that make up the mesh is between 0.5 and 2 microns, their random arrangement facilitates the retention of 99.9% of particles, including the smallest, in three different ways:
- Impact – Through this mechanism the largest particles collide directly against the mesh when they are dragged through the filter and are adhered to the mesh.
- Interception – Particles do not collide directly, but are adhered to the fibers when rubbed.
- Diffusion – This phase is based on the random motion of particles in a fluid, in this case air, following Brownian motion. According to this principle, the smallest particles immersed in the air that flows through the filter lose strength and inertia when colliding with the gas molecules until they are stranded in the fibers that make up the mesh, facilitating them to be trapped by any of the two previous mechanisms.
HEPA filters and hand dryers
As a result of the appearance of Covid-19, hygienic-sanitary measures have been reinforced in practically all areas of daily life to minimize the chances of contracting any type of disease.
This has also affected the bathrooms of spaces such as airports, shopping centers and large supermarkets among others.
And, although even the Ministry of Health of the Government of Spain pronounced itself in favor of the use of electric hand dryers as an effective and safe element for hand hygiene, LOSDI has decided to include in its catalog new models of electric hand dryers with HEPA filter to make them safer if possible.
Being equipped with a HEPA filter, hand dryers are able to trap any type of bacteria, including those of the SARS-CoV-2 virus (Covid-19), preventing their free circulation through the environment and providing a completely safe space for users.
